Get to Know Your Bloggers | Currently Reading
We are kicking off a series of intermittent posts called “Get to Know Your Bloggers” so you can, well, get to know us! We thought it might also provide a nice reprieve from the more serious subjects. To start, we are each giving insight into whatever book is currently on our bedside tables.
Growing up, my Mom taught us to never leave the house without a book. It is one of the reasons I wear a backpack style purse that is conveniently just large enough to stash a book. Over the years, this advice has proven useful time and time again. It has come to my rescue in many places — from the dreaded waiting room to those awkward social situations (you know the ones).
I would describe my reading style as loyal. While I am a fast reader, I only read one book at a time. And if it is an especially good book, I will sometimes avoid reading it to delay reaching the end. Sounds counterintuitive, I know! For me, reading is an escape, so I prefer fiction. I usually gravitate towards culinary cozy mysteries, beach reads, chick-lit, and the occasional young adult novel.
I have to confess that I do judge a book by its cover! Which brings me to the book that I am currently reading: At Least You Have Your Health by Madi Sinha. It is a women’s fiction novel centered around healthcare, work-life balance, family dynamics, economic disparity, and cultural differences (specifically highlighting Indian culture). Despite the serious nature of these relatable topics, I have found myself laughing out loud on many occasions. I love books that bring comedic relief when needed and this one does just that, often through the innocent lens of the book’s youngest characters (i.e., the main character’s children). I am about half way through the book and I am finding myself avoiding reading — you know what that means!
Jourdan and I have a very different experience when it comes to the love of reading. I grew up hating to read books! I read because I had to for school and once I left school I was happy to never pick up a book again (well that’s what I thought). As I grew in my career the books that I read were educational books to help me with projects that I was working on. Then I decided one day that I wanted to read for enjoyment and not just for ‘work’. Thus began my mini book collection of different genres of books. I noticed that I lean more towards the inspirational books that make me want to conquer the world once I finish reading the book.
Which leads me to the book that I am currently reading: One Good Word A Day by Julie Fisk, Kendra Roehl and Kristin Demery. These 3 women decided to write this book to help inspire and help focus readers on one good word each day instead of the typical one word a year. Those that select a focus word for the year (aka me) sometimes forget their word by March (aka me again). By selecting one word a day that is thought provoking, spiritually relevant, and encouraging it will help readers find a little encouragement and be uplifted in every moment.
